The departments of geomechanics, field measurements and computational modelling have been provided with modern equipment, which makes it possible to conduct investigations on rock mechanics in accordance with the up-to-date state of research and development.
For rockmechanical laboratory investigations, IfG has the following equipment available:
  • Climate-controlled rooms for storage of specimens at conditions which correspond to those present in-situ
  • Laboratory for mineral-petrographic examinations, density and moisture determination, ultra-sound measurements and photographic documentation
  • Workshop for the preparation of specimens in high precision in accordance to testing requirements
  • geomechanical investigation and test laboratory containing a
  • servo-controlled hydraulic testing machine, system RBA 2500 (max. axial force: 2.5 MN) with 2 triaxial cells (test specimens up to 110 mm diameter and 220 mm length) for confining pressures of up to 100 MPa as well as test temperatures in the range 295 - 350 K.
  • servo-controlled hydraulic testing machine, system SMH 250 (max. axial force: 250 kN) with several triaxial cells (test specimens up to 40 mm diameter and 100 mm length) for confining pressures of up to 50 MPa as well as test temperatures in the range 295 - 350 K, a pressure cell with actuator for the vertical pressure and measuring device for the increasing lateral pressure (diameter 155 mm, max. filling height 350 mm) and attachments for bending tests
  • Hydraulic testing machine for different materials (max. axial force 5 MN) with force and strain control, a pressure cell (diameter 0.50 m, max. filling height 0.8 m) for powdered material with gauges for lateral pressure; a true triaxial assembly for testing of cubic samples with 100 mm edge length
  • 36 testing rims for long-term creep tests in climate-controlled laboratories, with triaxial cells for testing in compressional and extensional loading
  • Program systems for data recording and evaluation (TEST-POINT)
