IfG Institut für Gebirgsmechanik GmbH Leipzig was founded in 1990 by employees of the former Institut für Bergbausicherheit Leipzig (Institute for Mining Safety in Leipzig) and is based on more than four decades of continuously applied research activity in the field of rock mechanics.

IfG Institut für Gebirgsmechanik GmbH Leipzig conducts research work into the development of fundamental geomechanical / geotechnical safety concepts and produces evidence reports on geomechanical / geotechnical stablity and long-term safety in the form of design concepts, site planning procedures, regional planning and public acceptance procedures for underground openings in the rock mass, and for the development, mining and filling of deposits.
