Since the foundation of the Institut für Gebirgsmechanik GmbH Leipzig (Institute for Rock Mechanics) in 1990 approximately 350 geomechanical projects commissioned by 73 institutional establishments or commercial firms have been processed.

IfG's references are primarily in the following areas:
  • Assessment of the long-term safety of underground deposits in Zielitz, Borth and Niedersachsen- Riedel
  • Assessment of long-term safety of various underground waste disposals in Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia.
  • Assessment of high pressure gas storage in underground caverns in the locations Bernburg, Bad Lauchstädt, Epe, Kraak, Xanthen, Pechensen, Etzel and Kiel.
  • Research work under contract from the Federal Government and States for the development of fundamental geomechanical risk scenarios and safety concepts, above all in the field of final disposal of radioactive waste and in relation to the underground storage of toxic chemical waste in saliferous formations.
  • Assessment of leaching caverns in the Harsefeld salt dome and the deposits at Teutschenthal, Bernburg and Staßfurt.
  • Dimensioning of mining systems in potash and rock salt mines in Thuringia, Hessen and Saxony-Anhalt.
IfG Leipzig works as an official expert in the field of rock mechanics such as for the State Ministry for the Environment and Agriculture of Saxony.
